Can a dementia patient be cared for at home?

About dementia, causes, signs & symptoms of dementia and Treatment of dementia.

Dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to remember or make decisions that interfere with doing everyday activities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Though dementia mostly affects older adults, it is not a part of normal aging.

In-home care includes a wide range of services provided in the home, then in a hospital. It can allow a person with dementia to stay in his or her own home. It also can be a great assistance to caregivers.

 Signs and symptoms of Dementia:

Symptoms of dementia can vary greatly. Examples include:

Problems with short-term memory.

Tracking bag or wallet.

Debt settlement.

Food preparation.

Remembering appointments.

Traveling outside the neighbourhood.

Many cases develop, which means that the symptoms of dementia start slowly and get worse. If you or someone you know has a memory problem or other changes in your thinking ability, do not ignore it. See a doctor immediately for the cause. A specialist examination may identify a treatable condition. And even if the symptoms indicate dementia, early diagnosis allows the individual to benefit the greatest from the available treatment and offers the opportunity to volunteer for clinical trials or studies. It also provides time to plan for the future.

Causes of Dementia:

Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with one another. When brain cells fail to communicate normally, thinking, behaviour, and emotions may be affected. The brain has many different regions, each of which is responsible for different functions (for example, memory, judgment, and movement). If cells in a particular area are damaged, that region may not be able to function normally. Different types of dementia are associated with certain types of brain cell damage in specific areas of the brain. For example, in Alzheimer’s disease, high levels of certain proteins inside and outside the brain cells make it difficult for brain cells to stay healthy and communicate. The brain region called the hippocampus is the center of learning and memory in the brain, and the brain cells in this region are often the first to fail. This is why memory loss is often one of the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Although many brain changes that cause dementia are permanent and worsen over time, the mental and emotional problems caused by the following conditions may be better when the condition is treated or directed:

Depression.

Side effects of medication.

Excessive alcohol consumption.

Thyroid problems.

Vitamin deficiency.

Dementia treatment and care:

Treatment for dementia depends on the cause. In the case of progressive dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, there is no cure, but one treatment – aducanumab (Aduhelm) – is the first treatment that shows that removing amyloid, one of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, in the brain is a sensible one. which may reduce dementia and be effective in people living with Alzheimer’s disease. Some can temporarily alleviate the symptoms of dementia and improve the quality of life of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. The same drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s are among the drugs sometimes prescribed to help with the symptoms of other forms of dementia. Drug-free therapies can also alleviate some of the symptoms of dementia. Finally, the path to new effective home treatment for dementia is an increase in research funding and increased participation in clinical studies.
